Carers Week
2010 is the tenth year that Carers Week has been held in its current format. Organised by a consortium of seven national charities, over 100,000 carers take part in the thousands of activities held in every part of the UK.

Extra Care organised a series of events in Whiteabbey, Enniskillen and Ballymena.  "Care for a Walk" attracted all those people who provide care on a daily basis, whether it be for a family member or through being employed at Extra Care.  The aim of each event was to raise awareness of the important role carers have with people in our communities.  Continuously caring for someone else is a strain and most people do not realise the effort and time that is given by employees from Extra Care.

Electric Savings for Extra Care

3 Feb 2010

Local energy supplier NIE Energy has donated free energy saving light bulbs to a group of older people in Ballymena.

Peter Erwin from NIE Energy’s Ballymena office met with staff and clients of Extra Care at their Ballymena centre to present Extra Care with free energy saving light bulbs.

Peter Erwin from NIE Energy said: “NIE Energy is delighted to be donating free energy saving light bulbs to Extra Care for their staff to distribute to their vulnerable clients.

“NIE Energy is keen to help people save energy and money, especially the vulnerable. One simple way to do this is to replace standard light bulbs with energy saving ones. An energy saving light bulb uses a fifth of the electricity of a normal bulb. Each bulb when put in a frequently used light, can save approximately £10 a year off your electricity bill.

“Traditionally, energy saving bulbs were bigger than standard bulbs and either didn’t fit or poked out on top of the lamp shade. That’s not the case anymore. You can now get energy saving bulb equivalents of nearly every shape of bulb you might need and they are nice and bight as well.”

Geraldine Martin, Benefit Advisor from Extra Care’s Ballymena Office said: “I am delighted to receive these free energy saving light bulbs from NIE Energy.

“Extra Care provides carers that visit people with health problems in their homes, sometimes 4 to 5 times a day. Through working together with our clients we also offer benefit advice and practical support.

“As every penny counts for our clients, it is great to be able to give something practical to help them save energy and money. NIE Energy’s donation of free energy saving light bulbs and temperature cards for our clients provides us with opportunity to do this.”

Elaine MacRory, carer of her father Stanley Bell, explained: “My Father lives on his own and has a lot of health problems. Receiving energy saving bulbs has many benefits to him. It helps in saving money and reduces fuel poverty.”
